Custom-Made Mouth Guards
Dr. Meysam can provide you with a custom-made night guard or athletic guard, consisting of a thin layer of molded plastic that fits snugly over your teeth, prevents the top teeth and bottom teeth from making contact, and (in the case of an athletic guard) protects you from blows to the mouth.
During your first appointment, we will make impressions of your upper and lower teeth. These will be sent to a dental laboratory, where trained technicians will model and form the guard appliance. Dual-laminate mouth guards consist of two layers, an inner layer for comfort and an outer layer for durability. Proform athletic guards, which we recommend, are made of three laminated plastic layers and incorporate a shock transmitter behind the four most vulnerable teeth – the incisors.
During your second visit, we will make sure the guard fits properly and give you instructions regarding its use and care. That part is simple! Brush your guard when you brush your teeth! Depending on the type, the use, and the degree of care, a guard generally lasts from three to ten years.

What is the difference between a night guard and a sports mouth guard?

Store-bought and boil-and-bite guards are inexpensive but often fit loosely, feel bulky and can interfere with breathing or speaking, so they are worn less. A custom guard is made from impressions of your teeth, so it fits securely and comfortably — and a guard that is comfortable is one you will actually wear.
How long does it take to get a custom mouth guard?
Usually two visits. At the first, we take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory, where your guard is formed. At the second visit we check the fit, make any small adjustments and explain how to use and care for it. With normal care, a guard can last for years, depending on the type and how heavily it is used.
Does the CDCP or insurance cover mouth guards?
Mouth guards and bruxism appliances, including night guards, are NOT covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Private insurance plans vary, so check your own coverage before treatment. Our team can confirm the cost of your guard at your assessment before anything is made.
What should I do if a tooth is chipped or knocked out during sports?
Act quickly. Hold a knocked-out permanent tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it briefly if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk or saliva. Then seek emergency dental care as soon as possible — ideally within the hour — and bring any broken fragments with you.
